In an ongoing battle over online gambling between the tiny island nation of Antigua and the United States, Antigua has decided to seek outside help in its fight against the U.S and, over U.S. objections, has set up an online gambling industry on its shores. The online gambling industry, according to Antigua’s finance minister, will bring at least 10 new online gaming businesses open for business next year, in addition to the 14 already licensed online gaming businesses operating there. It is also expected that the new online companies will generate hundreds of new jobs as well as millions of dollars in licensing fees. Meanwhile, the United States continues to pursue its stance that online gambling should be prohibited because it violates some state laws. In an effort to fight the U.S. on this matter, Antigua launched a complaint with the World Trade Organization and argued that the U.S. position runs counter to global trade rules. To date, the WTO has not yet announced its ruling on the matter. Posted on: December 6, 2005
