Scooop.net, a media website that takes polls on controversial topics via the Internet, has released the results of its poll concerning the legalization of Internet gambling. The results indicate that the majority of Americans think that Internet gambling should be made legal in the United States. The recently released results of Scooop.net’s weekly hot topic poll on the Internet gambling issue show that Americans believe that U.S. based casinos should be granted the right to run online casino gaming web sites. In fact, according to the poll, 67 percent of those surveyed think that the U.S. federal government should legalize online gaming so that U.S. companies can participate. The survey results are somewhat questionable, however, as it is run by a company with connections to a marketing and PR group, and does it not give any indication or authentication of the sample. No information on the numbers of people who actually voted or were interviewed in the poll is provided. If the poll is to be believed, though, it strongly confirms the feeling that most Internet gamblers have had for a long time – Internet gambling should be legalized in the United States as it is in many other parts of the world. Of those that participated in the survey, 33.7 percent said that they wouldn’t actually play at online casinos even though they believed the U.S. should legalized Internet gambling so that U.S. companies could compete with foreign Internet gambling companies. 33.9 percent of those surveyed said that they would definitely try it out if the practice were made legal. In another question on the survey concerning security aspects of online gambling, it was made clear that most people in the U.S. would feel more secure gambling online using a U.S. based casino. Almost two thirds of those surveyed said they would feel safer playing in a U.S. based, online casino because the casinos would be regulated by U.S. law. Only 3.4 percent of those surveyed stated that they would rather play in an international, online casino. A bit of interesting information gleaned from the survey was that the majority of those surveyed feel that while the U.S. should permit online gambling, it should not become involved in the oversight of the online gambling industry. Of those polled, 53.7 percent said that, since the Internet is really a borderless community that crosses international lines, the U.S. government should have no role in regulating Internet activity by U.S. citizens, including online gaming.
