An international summit on online gambling is being planned sometime during 2006. The UK government is behind the move and will be the sponsor. The principal objective will be to establish a code of international standards that can be applied to the industry to protect consumers and promote business at the same time. Britain was one of the first countries in the world to legalize online gambling. Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, explained the thinking behind the summit: “The main reason for passing the 2005 Gambling Act was to regulate new forms of gambling and provide stricter protection for children and the vulnerable. But we can only go so far alone. This is a global issue that requires a global solution.” Ms. Jowell added, “Controls are also needed to ensure that organized crime does not move into the online gambling field, that advertising is decent, legal, honest and truthful and that the vulnerable are protected from the consequences of gambling addiction.” A Culture, Media and Sport spokesman also explained that the conference would bring together governments, regulatory agencies and legitimate gambling operators to ensure that consumers are protected and that the market for reputable services will continue to flourish.
