Serious swimming training is no joke and if there is no pool nearby and the swimmer does not have a driving license, it means that the driver spends untold hours hanging around and killing time in any way they can think of. I have tried sitting in a nearby coffee shop reading a book or doing the crossword. In have tried writing my novel on the laptop, I have tried playing solitaire and freecell. Nothing seems to make time go faster. Even a little solitary online gambling was unsuccessful once I realized I was gambling to pass the time and not to enjoy myself. But yesterday, me and another few bored grandfathers solved the problem. We found each other in the coffee shop and someone recognized someone else from the pool “Hey, you’re waiting for a swimmer! All those waiting for swimmers raise their hands!” There were eight of us. “Gentlemen, I just so happen to have my laptop computer with me. May I suggest Texas Hold’em?” and the game was on. We pushed two tables together, the minimum bet was set at a dollar, coins hit the table-tops and the cards were dealt. The excitement was terrific. Mine cards were a Jack and an Ace, not bad for a starting hand in a new poker school, right? From there it only got better. The flop contained anther Ace, the turn was a Jack and the river one more Jack. Starting jackpot was mine so I paid for the first round of cappuccinos. All in all we had a wild afternoon in the coffee shop. I came home with an extra $140 in my pocket and in a roaring good mood. Tommy and his swimming mates, all future Olympic champions, racked up about extra 50 laps each because the grandfather drivers were late in returning to the pool, the coffee shop ran out of coffee for the first time in its history and the online casino did a roaring trade for a few hours. Everyone was happy! Posted on: December 9, 2009
