I landed up in hospital last week after experiencing some excruciating pains – a kidney stone it appears. The stone was dealt with quickly and efficiently but the doctors suggested I stay overnight just to make sure… By 8 pm I was bored. By 9 pm I thought about checking myself out and going home. At 10 pm the pain came back and required another shot to subdue it. At midnight I realized that sleep was out of the question and I considered firing up my laptop and spending the rest of the night gambling online to ward off the pain. Luckily I had brought my air-phone as the hospital does not have WiFi. Three minutes after I logged into the online casino a nurse walked into my room to check why the light was on. She got pretty excited when she saw me playing the slot machines and ran out to call her friend. Friend called friend and five minutes later the entire night staff in the men’s section were crowded around my bed. “Change to roulette!” called someone, “then we can all play!” I made the change and as soon as the roulette table appeared they started calling numbers. I spun the wheel a few times and listened to the shrieks of delight and the groans of disappointment as the numbers came up. “Can we play for money?” someone asked. “Sure,” I said. “I have a deposit account in this online casino. We’ll play on my account but you have to give me cash for your bets so I don’t end up losing out.” “Great! Put 5 dollars on number 17, that’s my birthday!” She put the $5 note down and I clicked the bet into the online casino on the laptop. Luckily I had a couple of hundred dollars in my wallet because number 17 came up and I paid her $175 immediately. But that was the only win. All the others lost and I got back about $80. On the next spin I got back about $100. The game was on, the wheel spun, the ball clicked and the money poured into my hands. A profitable kidney stone. Even after paying the hospital account next morning there was plenty left for me. Posted on: January 1, 2010
