Online card room, Poker Room, has assembled a 19-member poker team comprised of only top players to compete in the upcoming World Poker Tour World Championships. The cost of assembling the team came to over a half a million dollars.
The championships, held at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, started April 18 and continue through to the 24th. A spot on Poker Room’s team is worth $27,900, which covers travel and accommodation costs as well as the $25,000 tournament buy-in. The team was selected from a pool of more than 100 poker players who represent PokerRoom.com in some of the most prestigious poker tournaments in the world. Players qualify to play at major land-based events only after they compete successfully at online qualifying tournaments.
Members on the Poker Room team are quite diverse ranging from a California-based investment-banking analyst to a sports apparel sales representative from Texas. Jim Davenport, the analyst, landed an exclusive PokerRoom.com endorsement deal in the beginning of March 2006 after winning the inaugural PokerRoom.com "Become a Poker Pro" event. Included with the endorsement deal are travel expenses and buy-ins for at least 12 major poker tournaments.
A spokesperson for PokerRoom.com, Glenn Cademartori, said: “Team PokerRoom is as much about the camaraderie among the players and enthusiasm for the game as it is about the competition and earning a seat to play in the biggest tournaments like the WPT World Championship”. He added: ” "It provides a forum for all types of players to learn from one another as they develop their individual skills needed to enjoy, compete and succeed in the game of poker”.
