In an announcement made last week by the UK Gambling Commission, the new regulatory body reported that it had put together a new set of conditions and codes for licensing online gambling operators and their staff. The Commission said that the new regulations provide the organization with new legal powers to monitor the online industry and prosecute illegal gambling. The Gambling Commission will also be expected to advise central and local government on matters pertaining to the gambling industry. Established in 2005, the Gambling Commission’s objective is to protect the public from unfair and unsafe gambling practices by regulating the gambling industry. According to a spokesperson for the Commission, the new set of licensing conditions and codes will soon be revealed in a report to the gambling industry. "Britain's gambling laws are undergoing wholesale reform and from September next year all operators must be licensed by the Gambling Commission", said the Commission’s chairman, Peter Dean. "The conditions and codes set out the rules which operators must observe to meet our three licensing objectives of keeping crime out of gambling, ensuring that gambling is fair and open, and protecting children and other vulnerable people". Operators that fail to maintain the standards of the Gambling Commission or breach their licensing conditions can be prosecuted by the regulatory body and be required to pay hefty fines.
