With below freezing temperatures in some Canadian and U.S. cities, people have been flocking indoors for entertainment rather than expose themselves to the extreme temperatures outside. This can translate into good news for online gambling operators who run what is already one of the most popular forms of online entertainment around. The numbers of visitors to online gambling sites in the last week has soared, according to a couple of sites, and with predictions for more of the same type of weather that phenomenon may continue for a while. Online poker room, PokerStars, was one such company to benefit from the cold weather, showing an increase from 8000 poker players hitting its virtual tables in a 24-hour period to 12,000 players. The Full Tilt Poker site also saw a significant increase in the number of visitors to its site where the daily average number of visitors went from 3,795 to 6,362 visitors in a 24-hour period. Not to be outdone, Mansion Poker reported a surge in traffic from the Midwest states where extreme winter conditions also existed. The cold weather conditions aren’t always good news for online gambling sites and other online entertainment sites, however, since the freezing cold temperatures could disrupt power supplies, rendering PCs unusable. The freezing weather is supposed to continue into the weekend in highly populated areas on the U.S. and Canadian east coast as well as in some major cities in Northern Europe.
