Poker Robots Predicted to Threaten Online Poker Industry

“Within a short amount of time we are going to see about one in a hundred people playing honestly. The rest will be using bots or it will be computers playing against computers.”

This prediction from an anonymous online gambler who admits to using technological devices to cheat poker sites regularly in the past comes as no surprise to the average poker fan. Controversy surrounding the use of poker robots and fears of what their potential impact on the online poker industry might be are common news items in today’s online poker world. Despite online poker companies dismissing these claims as mostly irrational fears, the anonymous online gambler, who says he himself has made millions from bending the rules, insists that in the near future 99 percent of all those playing poker online will be cheating. This would reverse the tables on online casinos, which have previously enjoyed taking money from the gambler. If poker bots make it into wide circulation, it could be the gambler stripping the casino bare.

However a spokesman for poker giant PartyPoker.com refutes these predictions. “Of course we are aware that there are going to be increasing levels of sophistication with these things but we’re also developing greater levels of sophistication to combat them,” he says.

The spokesman went on to say that there have always been gamblers who have attempted to cheat the casinos but their attempts to do so have usually been thwarted. PartyPoker.com relies on its professionally trained staff and its state of the art security technology to detect suspicious gambling behavior on its website. Most players who try to cheat are generally found out and banned from PartyPoker.com.

On the issue of robots outnumbering authentic human players at poker sites in the near future, PartyPoker.com’s spokesman indicates that the chances of this occurring are minimal. “I can’t speak for other sites but the people sitting there on our virtual poker tables are very real,” he says.
