Tessa Jowell, the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport for the United Kingdom, has let the British Casino Association AGM know that those companies that either publish or broadcast information regarding illegal online gambling advertisements should expect to face prosecution. Because of recent concerns that are being made with regard to the increasing possibilities of online gambling operators to advertise their services illegally, Jowell warned of the likelihood that legal action would be initiated against those publishers or those broadcasters that continue to violate existing laws regarding the advertising of online casino gambling sites. Jowell is also reported as saying that his office is planning to issue new guidelines and to put those offending advertisers and publishers on notice that that his office will not hesitate to request that the Crown Prosecution Service act. Jowell further explained that following the year 2006, after consultation, no further applications for certificates of consent as regards the establishment of new casino licenses will be allowed. He stated that his office has clarified throughout the process that it intends to avoid any proliferation of the number of smaller casinos. The present law requires that online casino and poker rooms operate offshore but soon, because of the Gambling Act of 2005, for the first time online gambling companies will be permitted to operate from within Great Britain.
