In its edition this September first, Le Figaro published that the bill in regard to the opening of the French market to internet gambling has received the seal of approval from the European Union. In the previous June, the European Commissioner responsible for Companies and Industry, Mr. G?nther Verheugen, discovered a certain amount of incongruity with European laws, in the main concerning the provision of services in the Union and that France was in jeopardy of being sued by the Commission for infringements of a number of rules and regulations pertinent to the EU. A great deal of required changes was introduced by France to it original laws and it made suitable amendments to the rules. These amendments which have produced a more attuned state for operations of internet gambling in France appear to be agreed to by the European Union. Licensees from other member states of the European Union will now have to be accepted by the French establishment. New operators for maintaining a special financial representative in France also became a superfluous requirement. Prior to the legislation evolving into law, a number of obstacles must be overridden. The fund transfer rates’ upper limits and confirmation from assorted sports organizations in regard to allowing or not permitting sports betting in their tournaments has yet to be discussed. Just as the European Union awaits the finalization of the proposals by the French government, it appears to view France as complying and has indicated its agreement to the steps taken to date. Early at the beginning of next year, after considerable delaying, the French Parliament this October will study and possibly vote on the matters. In France, as soon as May 2010, licenses will possible be issued to operators. Posted on: October 7, 2009
