Mark Newhouse, a 21-year old poker player from North Carolina, beat out 540 other skilled and ambitious poker players competing at the World Poker Borgata Poker Open to take home an impressive $1.5 million grand prize for his efforts. In this week’s Open, Newhouse was the chip leader going into the final table – a table that included a number of talented players such as Anthony Argila, Chris Bell, Blaise Ingoglia, Chris McCormack and David Sklansky, but when it came down to heads-up play between Newhouse and McCormack, it was McCormack who was holding the chip advantage and the player most favored to win. In a surprise turn of events, however, Newhouse was able to regain his advantage and even take over the chip lead when he doubled his pot. Newhouse then beat McCormack with a full house. McCormack’s second place prize of $802,895 was, nonetheless, a sweet consolation prize. In fact, the large prize pool made big money payouts common at the final table with Blaise Ingoglia taking home $261,901 for 6th place. In addition to the $1.5 million grand prize, Newhouse also earned himself a $25,000 buy-in to the World Poker Tour Championships and the opportunity to play for further fame and fortune.
