Pippa Flanders, a mother of two from the United Kingdom, became the reigning champion this week at the Poker Den this week when she beat out 70 other poker players vying for the Party Poker.com World Open II Championship title. Professional poker players came from around the world to compete for the title and the $200,000 pay packet offered in the event, but none were a match for Flanders who triumphed and took home the winning check. The achievement is all the more notable since Flanders said she only started playing poker professionally in 2002. Making the achievement even more impressive was the fierce competition with which Flanders had to contend. Professionals like Tony Bloom, Harry Demetriou, Marc Goodwin, Tony Guoga, Kenna James, Roland De Wolfe, and last year's winner Lee Nelson were all there for the event, but in the end it was Flanders who came out on top. "To have been one of only two women who entered amongst over 70 entrants and to have won it is simply unbelievable and wonderful. Go girls," said Flanders. "I had a fantastic time playing the game and it was such a wonderful ending that I had always hoped for but never expected. I still can't believe I beat all those top names to the title. It really is a dream come true." "This has been an absolutely amazing finish to a great Party Poker.com World Open," said a spokesperson for Party Poker.com. "It's really exciting that Pippa's victory is the first great breakthrough for European women in poker and demonstrates the rise of women champions around the world in open poker tournaments." Channel 5 in the UK will be televising the PartyPoker.com World Open II over a 16-week period later on this year. Posted on: October 1, 2006
