As the World Series of Poker tournament progresses toward the finals, more and more players are dropping out and some of these dropouts include some of the biggest names in poker. By Saturday night there were only 135 players left in the tournament and by Sunday night that number had already been reduced to 45. Even some of the really famous players such as Josh Arieh, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu, as well as last year's champion Joe Hachem have been eliminated from the final playoffs. Not to worry though, players that made it this far still take home a nice reward. Sean Johnson, the last player to go out on Sunday, collected $164,932, showing just how large the prize pool is. Participants will resume playing in Vegas on Monday at noon with only 27 players remaining out of the original 8,773 that sat down to play in the initial round. Jamie Gold is in the lead at this stage of the tournament with a chip count of $7,330,000. His closest competitor is Eric Friberg. While still a ways behind, Friberg still poses a threat to Gold with a total chip count of $5,905,000. From this point on, remaining players will collect checks in impressive amounts as they get eliminated from the tournament. Of course, everyone playing is hopeful that he will make it to the final table, where each of the finalists will receive payouts in excess of a million dollars. The champion gets to walk away with no less $12 million! Posted on: August 16, 2006
