The month of October has been chosen for date of the next UK online gambling conference. According to a Financial Times report, October is when the UK government’s summit on gambling reform will be held. A quote in the Financial Times from Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, (the British politician who oversees this portfolio) indicated that the one of the goals of the much awaited summit will be to get international agreement on a new code of practice. Britain is hoping to convince offshore gambling bases such as Antigua, Caicos Islands, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Gibraltar and the Turks to agree to new internationally consistent controls on the sites. These countries are the ones reaping most of the financial benefits from the explosion in online gambling Jowell says that the UK government is planning to invite the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization, as well as ministers from all the main offshore gambling jurisdictions.
