Poker tournaments have become million dollar events and online poker sites are biw routinely running tournaments for thousands of players. One type of these tournaments is the high value tournament some of which are particularly popular. While not a major event by itself, it is big enough to indicate how much action is going on over the Internet at online poker sites on a weekly basis. The PokerStars $1 Million Guaranteed tournament attracted 1301 players with its $1.3 million prize pool and $1,000 + $50 buy-in and when the final table had been decided after some intense play, the average stack easily exceeded 425,000. At the death, the two final heads up players competed for a first prize of $262 151 plus some change. The second placed gambler took home $161,974.50 and of the remaining eight finalists not one was below $18,000 in rewards. These numbers are more typical of big progressive wins at online casinos. The success and popularity of these tournaments are often overlooked amidst all the publicity for major land and online special events like the WPT, the WSOP and other competitions arranged by leading companies.
