It does seem that the Antigua and Barbuda government’s delegation and the United States Trade Representative to the World Trade Organization encounter the preceding Friday was successful, and might be providing the termination of the exceedingly long argument regarding the two countries’ Internet gambling issue. According to this week’s Antigua Sun, the Finance Minister, Dr. Errol Cort, the chief of the island’s mission, feels assured that an agreement might be attained with the American representatives in the wake of the meetings. According to Dr. Cort’s report to the Antigua Sun, it was clear that they could continue the discussion regarding the specifics for the possibility of agreements and although they haven’t yet got to the stage where he could state that an agreement exists. He does sense that since their first meeting on January 18 they are now much nearer to an agreement. Although the minister couldn’t divulge any specifics due to the restrictions of secrecy, he did have hope that an agreement would be attained by the target date of June 6, when the postponed court actions could begin again between the parties. He wouldn’t be against the postponing the target schedule, he indicated, if an actual agreement would be in the offing. According to Cort, he was fortunate in being able to have a meeting with top officials in USTR as well as in the Unites States’ Homeland Security and State, Justice, Commerce and Treasury departments.
