The charitable arm of Bodog.com, the Calving Ayre Foundation, has embarked on a series of charitable projects designed to benefit the population of Antigua and Barbuda. The Foundation, in an initiation of the first of several projects yet to come, launched two projects designed to advance the educational opportunities of local Antiguan youth. The initiatives include the construction of an eating facility at a local secondary school that houses students participating in the government’s meal program, as well as the financing of a fence around school property, which will help create a safer environment for the students. Government officials made the announcement about the projects during a news conference called by Dr. Errol Cort, the Finance Minister of Antigua and Barbuda: "Calvin Ayre had stepped forward to sponsor T.N. Kirnon's $203 000 school meals facility, as the secondary school prepares to become a part of the national program." Such an eating facility will provide primary and junior secondary school children a safe and clean eating environment where they can be seated while eating their food. The construction of the fence that the Calvin Ayre Foundation is funding is something that the school has been requesting from the government for years since the school is bordered by two extremely busy roads. One of these roads runs alongside the soccer field, creating a hazardous environment for the students who often cross the street in order to retrieve a runaway ball. The other side of the school grounds is adjacent to a prison, which also represents a security threat to the school children. The fence, when completed, will run along the perimeter of the school grounds and will not only help keep the children safe while they are on school grounds but will also keep out people who do not belong on school property. Bodog owner, billionaire Calvin Ayre has expressed an interest in contributing to the social development of the local Antiguan community, where Bodog.com and the Calvin Ayre Foundation call home, and the school projects are just one element of the development efforts. "We're extremely motivated to build on the educational needs of the local Antiguan youth, and we look forward to carrying out many more projects in this area in the years to come," said Ayre.
