A new game of poker, called duplicate poker, was established as a way of getting around the luck versus skill debate when it comes to the game of the poker. In duplicate poker, the cards are set-up so that each table and each seat at each table get exactly the same cards. Hole card, flop, turn, and river cards are also the same at each table. The idea behind duplicate poker is to take the element of chance out of the game, thereby turning it into a true game of skill. Once determined to be a game of skill, the legal issues associated with playing poker largely fall by the wayside. In duplicate poker, after the different games are completed, the results of the players in the same seat on different tables but with identical cards and chips are compared. The concept was demonstrated this week at the Oklahoma State Championships at the Cherokee Casino in Tulsa. Several pro players attended including Scotty Nguyen, Chip Reese and Linda Johnson. Since the field was limited to 100 players at ten tables, each player was actually only playing against nine other players in the same seat at the different tables. While there are a number of other rules and conventions that apply to duplicate poker, the basic concept is sound and could provide a handy argument against legislation that seeks to ban poker because it is a form of gambling.
