Thanks in large part to heavy activity in its online poker division, the Swedish government-owned and licensed online gaming company, Svenska Spel, posted record profits for 2006 this week. The online poker division, which was only opened in March of last year, has apparently been very successful. At least that’s what CEO Jesper Karrbrink said in an interview with the newspaper Dagens Industri: “It’s really fulfilled its purpose to bring home a big part of the Swedes' unregulated poker playing to a responsible environment within the country's borders”. Karrbrink also added that even though Svenska Spel is doing well he would like to see changes on the Swedish gaming market: "New gambling legislation through which all types of gambling are regulated is needed. Whether it's through a state monopoly, or a license system where we compete with privately owned companies is up to the politicians to decide." Karrbrink further added: "With this record profit to back us up, we will feel pretty comfortable either way”. Last year Svenska Spel saw its best financial results ever, making a total of $685 million in profits. Posted on: February 21, 2007
