On February 15th, Card Player magazine will be rolling out the red carpet at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theatre in Los Angeles for the poker industry's first Player of the Year Awards Gala Banquet.
The awards show will be sponsored and produced by online gambling group Bodog.com and will feature Hollywood and poker superstars gathering for the game's most coveted prizes. Deep-voiced funnyman Brad Garrett will be the MC.
Card Player Media Chairman Barry Shulman. Said, “The poker world is about to get a first-class awards banquet to honor the professionals who have turned this industry into a mainstream sport.” The 2005 Player of the Year award was won up by “The Master” Men Nguyen. Nguyen's 16 final tables and $973,620 in earnings earned him the top seed spot.
Two other awards - favorite overall poker player and best celebrity poker player comprise Card Player's People's Choice Awards. Card Player has narrowed votes to a final nominee list after intense online voting at Card Player's website. Eight additional awards will be announced at the Awards Banquet on February 15th in addition to the prestigious Player of the Year award. Poker's top players have already voted on the best cash game player, poker's top ambassador, best no-limit player, most entertaining player, best heads-up player, best mixed-game player, most feared player and most underrated player.
Final nominees for favorite poker player include big names like Chris Ferguson, Daniel Negreneau, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson and Mike Matusow. Finalists for best celebrity player include Jennifer Tilly, Gabe Kaplan and Tobey McGuire.
