After what many felt to be an extremely long delay, hand-held gaming devices will soon be available for use in Nevada. The Nevada Gaming Commission finally ruled that the gaming devices were “secure and reliable”, making room for the implementation of legislation allowing their use. Such a finding by the Commission was necessary before the actual mobile gaming regulations could be adopted. The regulations are designed to prevent minors from using them to gamble, as well as to make sure that their use is restricted to authorized- casino areas. With the hand-held devices, interested players will be able to gamble even while outside the actual casino area, such as in buffet lines or at the poolside. A meeting of the Nevada Gaming Commission, set to take place on March 23 in Las Vegas, Nevada, will likely adopt the rules for using the devices. Diamond Systems, a manufacture of the gaming devices, has already submitted its application for marketing their product although the process that will finally make the devices available on the market will probably take several more months. This is one of the final steps of the procedure that will let casino licensees use these devices if they choose," Bill Bible, head of the Nevada Resort Association, said following the vote. A law approved last year by legislators made Nevada the first U.S. state to approve the use of the wireless, handheld gambling devices at its hotel-casinos. Industry experts see the move as a possible window of opportunity for major land casino companies who are hoping to be able to offer Internet-based gambling in the not too distant future.
