My daughter came to me with this scheme and I was wondering what anyone here thinks about it.
She told me that she has friends that have sold their name, DL#, bank account #, and a utility bill to online gamblers/gamers. These people then verify the bank account by depositing a very small amount of money, say .10, then subsequently deposit a percentage of their winnings into the ID owners bank account as "payment."
I told her that it sounds dangerous to me. At the least she's putting her ID at risk for theft. As far as legality, I can't find a thing online about this type of "partnership."
Her friends are people she's known for awhile, and they say that they've actually had earnings from it, in the range of hundreds of dollars. She's a single mom and thinking that she'll be able to have a decent Christmas for her daughter from this. She also says that her bank account is safe because she only has a few dollars in it. This really raises red flags for me . . . .
Can anyone here tell me more about this?
Thanks so much!

Hi CoolGrandma,
This would be one step further than identity theft, they actually have you give your identity away. Besides being illegal it's dangerous. Giving someone all of that information will make it possible for them to take out credit cards in her name, steal any savings she has, and ruin her credit. These people don't sound like friends. I would strongly suggest to her that she stays away from them, or at least not give them any of her personal information and make sure that they don't have access to any of it when they come to her house (those who don't get when they ask may decide to simply take).
Good Luck
