Online gambling vs. financial chaos

The problem with financial chaos such as is raging all around us is twofold; the moment one lifts one’s head to see what’s happening to your friend, neighbor or relative, it hits you. The second and perhaps more dangerous, is that everything is all of a sudden connected. The chaos moves like the plague, one company catches it and then every other company on the block gets it too. Then it spreads to the next block and the one after that and soon the while city is reeling. Online gambling is nothing like that. It is a stand-alone activity not connected to the neighbors or to anyone else in the family.

Say for instance that I decide to do a little online gambling, like playing roulette. I go into my study, close the curtains, fire up the computer, log into my online casino, click on roulette and select $50 chips to play with. That’s me making all those decisions by myself. And then when I drop a chip on my birthday number, 23, spin the wheel and watch the little ivory ball whizzing around and then bouncing over the brass stoppers before falling into number 23, that’s entirely my own business. So is scooping up the $1,750 winnings lying on the table. Like I said, online gambling has no connection to anything else.

The state of the online gambling market has nothing to do with me deciding to leave that $1,750 lying on the table waiting for the next spin or finding its way into my pocket. I am my own boss, so I decide to leave it where it is. This time I hold my breath for the spin and I do not breathe until the ball drops. Oh yes! The breath-holder worked! $61,250 green smackers are lying there looking up at me!

Now comes the hard part. I am part of a family, after all. Little Johnnie, now 2 meters tall, has been nagging for his own car. His sister, who is 18 going on 29, is dying to make an overseas trip and my wife keeps talking about a new kitchen. I really don’t have a choice, do I? Who said that online gambling is a stand-alone activity?
