The technician was busy when I arrived, hunched over the screen of his computer and hiding it from view. I shuffled my feet, coughed and drummed my fingers, but it was a good ten minutes before he looked around to see who was there. That’s when I saw the screen. The guy was playing Texas Hold’em and at that moment he needed a 4 or a 9 to give him a flush and he was waiting for the river. He scowled at me with one eye while the other was firmly fixed on the screen. Then the river came down and it was a Jack. He turned back to his job. I showed him the problem and he said something about glue. I was furious by then. “… and come back in two hours,” he added. I went to the market and bought some bananas, walked into a book shop and browsed, drank a cup of coffee at a designer coffee shop and tried my best to waste 2 hours. If I had been closer to home I would simply have spent a maybe profitable 2 hours online gambling in some online casino and not noticing the time flitting by. Now time was moving at stalling speed and I couldn’t wait to get back to the lab. At least the guy could have offered me the use of his computer to gamble online while he was messing with the glue, I thought. Back at the lab I went through the waiting process again but I was cool with it now, picturing the technician, tools and glue, sweating over my repair job. Far from it. I peeked around the corner into the lab and heard the sound of the slot machine going in an online casino. It’s unmistakable. I bet the guy is chasing a progressive jackpot, I thought, followed by, I hope he doesn’t hit it before my job is finished and leave me standing here like this. I needn’t have worried. A hundred backs later I was smiling again. It’s not that easy to hit the big jackpot. Posted on: December 22, 2007
