I don’t really like working for these people, but they pay well and more important, they pay on time. So the worst part of the job is really not punishment, it’s hanging around in executive waiting rooms and doing a little online gambling until the big brass deigns to call me in. I mean, I’m being paid by the hour, working, waiting or gambling. Of course if I win I would consider offering them a cut, but it would be a fleeting thought – measured in microseconds. I settle down in a comfortable armchair outside the “Head of Purchasing” and log into the Silver Spanner, my favorite online gambling casino. I decide to play roulette. This is a game of instant satisfaction or frustration, depending on how you are doing. I decide to do well so that I will be in good mood if HOP ever calls me in. And with work and money in the offing, I drop a hundred dollar chip on my birthday and sit back, daring the roulette wheel to upset me. And he does. At an earning rate of $50 an hour this is expensive betting, but I swallow hard and decide to bet anther 2 hours work on the same number. The roulette wheel behaves itself this time and gives me birthday greetings and $3,500 as well, I feel much better now. Do I really need to go to this interview at all? I just put 70 hours of work under my belt. Even if I deduct the first $100 loss, I’m way ahead. I keep playing – maybe I can do it again. HOP emerges on the seventh spin of the wheel and beckons me in to his sanctuary. He inquires after my heath and says he has a lot of work for me. How do I feel about working? I choke and stammer. I would love to tell him about the game I played in his waiting room. ”I’m ready to work,” I say, “But my price just went up to $75 an hour.” Posted on: November 12, 2007
