Neither of said a word. We unzipped the case, hauled out the laptop and switched it on. As soon as we were in the internet we logged into an online casino. I checked the balance in my deposit account. Enough for a few hours of play. Only then did we pause. What are we playing was the unspoken question. We went to the slots and began taking alternate clicks at the ‘play max’ button. From there we graduated to video poker and we stayed there until Tom hit a flush which gave us some serious money. Then it was onto roulette. We took turns dropping $20 chips on the table and we watched as out little pile grew larger. At some point we switched to $50 chips and began playing single numbers. Finally we hit it. Tom’s wife’s birthday. We had a quick consultation and decided to leave the $1,1750 lying on the same number, 17, and we both sat back and took deep breaths for the next spin. We paused to listen to an announcement over the address system, fearing further delays to out flight, but we were lucky. Luckily there is no time restraint in online casinos. We could play at our own pace. But that particular spin seemed to take forever, almost as though someone had tied bricks to the underside of the wheel. Of course it came up. Sixty thousand bucks. To this day I don’t know what made me cash in. I carefully transferred the loot to my deposit account and logged out. I leaned back in my seat with a satisfied sigh and a smile on my face. What’s the problem, he asked. I never said a word, but I logged onto the online casino again, only this time I clicked on the ‘play for fun button’. He looked at me in puzzlement and began to play poker. He was holding four cards of a great possible flush in his hand when there was a brief battery message in bright yellow and then the screen went black. Uh-huh, he said. Posted on: November 2, 2007
