Timing is everything, and it amazes me how much that belief is affirmed to me on an almost daily basis. When and how you do things can decide on so much of your life. I don't know the actual statistics for now, but once upon a time a university degree after high school guaranteed you an approximate 40 percent higher income than your non-degree peers by the time you reach the age of 40. People who got married young have had the time and energy to save their money and have more in life than those who married older. People who have had their kids young have less of a serious break in their careers than those who have their kids in their 30's. It's all in the timing, the timing of things which is mainly beyond our control and yet it controls so much of our life. In a way, you could say that timing is luck. There are some people who believe that things happen at the time that they are meant to, as if things are according to some major plan that we're just not aware of. For the person who loves to game that is boiled down to when the time is right they will get that winning set of cards. Perhaps when they least expect it or when they need it most. Sometimes this happens, most of the time it doesn't. I have an uncle who has amazing timing for parking. He can go to any mall the day after Thanksgiving and he will find parking right next to an entrance even during the busiest time of the day and without spending more than 5 minutes looking. No, he isn't handicapped and he doesn't cheat on the space. He's simply has amazing timing, or good luck, depending on how you look at it. Timing is a gamble. Don't believe me? Check the US stock market. Housing prices were due to take a tumble. This would affect the building industry and their stocks. Then hurricane Katrina, Rita, and Wilma came blowing down the southern states and building industry stocks skyrocketed, as so many states would have to be rebuilt from the ground up. Gaming is all about timing. Getting the timing right, however, is something that is rare and beautiful and difficult. Learning about timing while playing is about as useful as telling someone to buy low and sell high. It's a fine statement, but it's impossible to predict the future, so there's no way to learn how to get good timing. It's simply a matter of luck. Strategy on the other hand, is something one can learn. With strategy one can predict the odds and statistics of something happening. This in turn affects your luck in timing, as you know that something is more likely to happen than not. Timing can be such a critical thing in life, getting to the emergency room 5 minutes earlier could mean the difference between life or death and getting to the poker table five minutes later could mean that all the hands being dealt will be in your favor. Now all we need is a crystal ball that actually works. Posted on: November 18, 2005
