Once every 3 or 4 months I take a trip to the other side of the city to visit my old partner, Sid. We worked together for almost 30 years and in that time we became close friends. Much older than me, Sid, a widower, retired and I took over the engineering practice which I still run. He looks forward to my visits and we usually find a quiet corner in the garden where we sit and reminisce over the ‘good old days’. I decided to drive over to see Sid this morning, a Saturday. I walked into the reception area, usually a very quiet place and found absolute turmoil. Residents were milling about, some yelling and shouting, others gabbling away. I managed to get to the reception counter. “It looks like a jail riot in here! What’s going on?” It seems that Sid gambled as well, but he started with the slot machines and never played anything else. “I played something called progressive slots,” he explained. “It was my first time. There was a button called ‘Max coins’ and that’s the one I used. I took a hundred dollars to play with and I promised myself that when it was gone I would quit. I won a little and lost a little and I was enjoying myself. I was playing a four reel slot machine – I had to get 4 cherries in a line and at first it seemed impossible. “Then I pushed the ‘Max coins’ button and it sounded like a fire alarm was going off. I hit the progressive jackpot which was standing at 502 thousand dollars. Everyone came running to see what had happened. Can you believe it? From an online casino! I thought those places never paid out. Now the entire retirement home is trying to do a repeat. Do you need any money?” Posted on: October 6, 2009
