By time we arrive, most of the guests are already milling around the huge lawn with drinks in their hands and oohing and aahing over friends and neighbors that they haven’t seen for months. It is a grand evening, clear skies with lots of stars overhead. The bar is a beehive with everyone buzzing around anxiously. The smell of roasting meat is everywhere and on the far side of the lawn I see two huge barbecues with whole sheep roasting. On the opposite side of the lawn are rows of real live slot machines and rows of laptops with their screens all tuned into online casinos and just waiting for customers.

What an evening! Our hosts are standing near the entrance to the lawn shaking hands with their guests. This End of the Summer affair has become a regular event. Last year I went home with a nice fat win in my credit account at the online casino. I hope I will be repeating the performance. The way things are out in the street today is no joke.

I walk along the row of laptops looking for a game that I fancy. Roulette! I haven’t had a spin at the roulette wheel for some time now. I log in and start playing with one $100 chip. I’m also feeling lucky tonight. I put the chip on black and wait for the spin. Great, 22 comes up and it’s black. I have doubled my money. I should do that again, I think and I leave the $200 on black and wait for the spin. Yep, number 6 it is and 6 is black. I now have $400.

I’m nervous to try that again so I drop one $100 chip on my birthday, number 23. I hold my breath now that I’m playing for major stakes. If 23 comes up I will quit and walk away, I promise myself. The wheel spins for ages and then the little ball seems to bounce around forever but it comes to rest safely on number 23! I have just won $3,500! Plus the $400 I won before, less a couple of hundred that I anted up. Close to $4,000. Of course the hosts will never check, but I left that party without even eating anything!
