First stopover will be Hong Kong. This is not traditionally the home of gambling in China. That’s at Macau, a little further down the coast. But hey, with my laptop I can gamble online wherever I am. Hong Kong is great, and the hotel is superb. I venture outside and almost faint as the thirty degree heat and high humidity smack me right in the face. The doorman sees me buckling at the knees and says ‘there is a mall next door. With air-conditioning! I rush back to my room, grab the laptop and run for the mall before the heat can do any damage. Inside its cool and elegant. There are lots of people walking about busy with their chores and shopping. I find a bench in a prominent position, open the laptop and log into an online casino. I turn the volume to ‘high’ and start playing the slots. The sound of bells ringing when I win and the clinking of the virtual coins they fall into the metal tray soon attracts passers-by and they stop to see what it’s all about. “Come and gamble online,” I say loudly, “what do you like, roulette, Texas Hold’em, blackjack?” “Texas Hold’em!” shouts someone from the back and I switch the game. “Who’s in?” I shout, “Ante up!” and the game is on. About 8 people put down their bets and I deal them their 2 cards each. Five of the players fold immediately and I rake in their bets. The other 3 start playing. I put down the flop: 7, 9, Queen, and another player folds. They put down their bets. They are obviously experienced online gamblers. I put down the turn: 7 and they bet again, one of them going all in. There is a nice pile of money on the table now and dead silence as I put down the river: Queen. One guy lets out a wild yell and turns up his two cards, showing a pair of queens. Unbelievably, the guy is holding 4 Queens in his hand. The other player throws in his two cards. “Next game? Any players?” I shout. Posted on: September 10, 2009
