This couple invites us over for dinner about twice a year. We’ve known them for about thirty years and we have a good relationship. The husband is a lawyer and is quiet but his wife makes up for it by carrying on a lively discussion. We love going there; the food is always excellent. She is an enthusiastic cook and everything is just perfect. They always have interesting guests and the discussions are always interesting. But last night was different. The other couple was a 90 year old woman and her daughter. The conversation was limited to “remember that woman, what was her name?” and “did you know the Smiths of New York city?” After half an hour of this my mind drifted to the new strategy I have been working on for the roulette table in the Velvet Slipper, my favorite online casino. I politely asked my host if I could use his computer to check if an important business email had arrived in my box and fled to the study, vowing not to return to the table. What a relief to get away from that conversation which was now into a list of old age complaints coming from the retirement home where the old lady lives. I logged into the Velvet Slipper and three minutes later I was into a spell of online gambling, playing roulette. I was in a reckless mood after the stifling conversation and I scattered chips on the table, hardly watching the spins, collecting my winnings and not bothering to count my losses. I bet, I spun the wheel and watched the croupier raking off my losses and watched the little ‘credit’ light flashing. I was waiting for the inevitable recall to the table from my wife who I was sure would be furious at my lack of manners. Good thing she didn’t know I was gambling online. Then I heard footsteps coming towards the study. I hit the ‘cash in’ button, logged out and switched off all in one motion. When I checked the online casino this morning, I found that I had won almost eight hundred dollars. Not bad for dessert! Posted on: August 15, 2007
