And to prove that I am the guy in charge of my money I choose to play online blackjack. At least here it is me who will decide if I should stand or hit, split or double. I am the one who can look at the assets which I am holding in my hand and decide if I should buy or sell. The stock exchange has been kind to me over the years despite all the warnings and forecasts of coming doom and disaster, and I have always been happy with the way the market and the people who know managed everything, including my puny amounts of money. But the romance is over.

I am going to sit tight with what I have. I have no doubt it will recover in time, but I’m in a hurry. I can’t sit around waiting forever, in case sanity should return to investors and institutions. From now on it’s me and me alone in the online casino playing with my own money and making my own decisions. More than that, I’m having fun. Losing a bet is not the same as losing money you invested buying stock in some company. All you know about the company is the product they make or sell, perhaps the names of the directors and the big investors and their track record over the past few years.

When you are gambling in an online casino you know all there is to know about the main character you are betting on – yourself. You know your strengths, weaknesses and impulses. You can probably draw a road map for your thinking for the next few hours and know exactly how you will behave if you have a winning streak or a long run of bad luck. Best of all, you will know when it’s time to log off, stand up and take a walk around the block keeping your hands in your pockets and not making any stupid decisions.
