The Wimbledon Men’s Final began under grey skies and Federer and Nadal immediately lifted the game of tennis to heights never seen before. They were simply outstanding and the huge crowd showed their appreciation of these fine sportsmen. We sat glued to the TV screen clapping and moaning with disappointment at the excellent shots and near misses. Someone shouted “I’ve got $50 that says that Federer will win!” and there was burst of betting among the men, followed by a secondary burst as side bets sprang up. “It will be a 3-setter! It will go 4 sets! I bet on 5 sets!” Then it began to rain and the women disappeared into their online casino. We men drank beer, laid more bets among us and waited patiently. The rain stopped and the tennis came back on. Money was handed over as the 3-set bets were lost. Federer and Nadal played on unperturbed. These are men of steel and nothing worries them. Then the rain started up again. This time the men rushed into the dining room and commandeered the laptops, switching them to craps in the same online casinos. Voices were raised as bets were called and more beer was brought in for the thirsty gamblers. Tennis resumed and the 4-set bets were paid. All was quiet in the dining room as we drifted away from the craps tables to watch the end of the tennis and the remarkable performance by Nadal. The moment the tennis was over the men were back at the craps table, yelling and screaming. Edna came in and pleaded with us to be quiet. We yelled louder, each of us trying to be a Rafael Nadal. The craps game in the online casino was hot and I was on a roll, throwing naturals one after the other. The boys were behind me, betting with me. Another seven then an eleven. And then the impossible, I rolled a two followed immediately with a double six! It was the police bull-horn that finally put an end to the night’s activities. As soon as I’m out of this jail cell I’ll be able to see how much I won. Posted on: July 10, 2008
