“Come in to the office,” says the boss. “Be there by nine.” I change my day around, walk in at 9 and find that I am alone. Everyone is ‘on site’ or ‘out in the field’ and will be in later. I take out my laptop and log into the Shifting Spanner, my favorite online casino. I warm up on the slots, but I turn the sound off so that no-one – if anyone ever arrives – will hear me winning the progressive jackpot and so ending my days of employment forever. Nothing works. It is impossible to line up four cherries on the reels. I get 3 in a row and even 3 lemons but the fourth remains elusive. I try spinning the reels without inserting the coins hoping to realign the icons, but it doesn’t help. I look around the online casino. I see a game of Texas Hold’em in progress and watch. The players are high rollers and are betting big. I decide to see if I can bluff my way into a big win. I take a seat and the live video dealer in the online casino looks at me and I push about a third of my chips into the middle of the table. He gives me my 2 cards, a 3 and a Jack. The deal goes around the table and comes back to me. I add a pile of chips and some of the other players raise their bets while others fold, leaving their ante as part of the growing jackpot. The flop drops and I see a 3, 9 and Jack. I now have a pair of 3’s and a pair of jacks - a fair hand but not necessarily a win. I raise my bet and watch the turn. A 3. I have a full house, 3’s and Jacks. Pretty good. But is it the winner? I bet the rest of my chips and see that the river is an Ace. I won a $2,000 jackpot. The boss arrived as the next hand was about to start so I stayed out and managed to make it home with all my money. Posted on: July 22, 2008
