After 10 minutes cooling off I start up the laptop, read the headlines and then log into an online casino. I drop a couple of big chips onto the roulette table and look around while the little white ball decides if its going be my friend or not. I am immediately stunned by some of the dressed-for-the-heat housewives walking around looking for designer coffee shops and hair salons. But I tear my eyes away and get back to the online casino. What do you know, one of my twenty dollar chips was on my birthday, as always, and that’s exactly where the ball stopped. Seven hundred dollars! Keep shining on me, baby, I say to the fierce sun, as I watch a tall, drop-dead blonde walking along. She is dressed in some sort of pale blue silk thing that is not doing what it is supposed to. How can she look so cool? She smiles at me as she gets close and glances at the screen of the laptop. I ask her if she would like to try a spin on my wheel. “What is that?” she asks pulling a face and frowning. She still looks gorgeous. She sits down on the bench next to me and I explain about the heat, the laptop, the online gambling, the online casino and my recent roulette win. “Thank you for the explanation, but I don’t bet,” she says. “I’m Carmella and I’d like to sit here and watch you, if that’s okay?” What a question, I laugh to myself, hoping that all my buddies will walk by and see me on the bench with this dream. But Murphy’s Law holds true and I don’t see anyone I know. So I go back to the online casino and my game of roulette and play, while Carmella, who doesn’t bet, chooses my numbers and the amounts of my chips. She proceeds to rack up a sizeable pile of winnings. We stay on the bench all day, until we are sure that the sun is safely out of the way. We used that day’s winnings to get married and take a long honeymoon. I still gamble online. Carmella refuses to bet, but still decides on every move I make. Posted on: July 10, 2007
