It all started out as a joke, of course. I had been going to the unemployment offices in town looking for a part time job to keep myself occupied. It’s an awful place, full of unhappy, irritable people who look as though they have been milling about there for years. Many of them probably have. My case was not dire so I didn’t do much pushing and I soon became bored with coming back day after day and just sitting around waiting for a clerk to attend to me. Tomorrow I’ll bring my laptop and do a little online gambling, I decided. At least that will relieve the boredom and maybe even show a profit. The minute I unzipped the laptop case people began to shuffle over to see what was going on. To most of them, I thought guiltily, a laptop must look like a time machine. They may never have seen such a thing. I logged into the Silver Spanner, an online casino that I know has a flashy and noisy website and I started playing roulette. I dropped a 50 cent chip on my birthday number twenty-three and I couldn’t help letting out a small yelp of excitement when the little white ivory ball dropped into slot No. 23. Of course my little victory was accompanied by some sour looks from the spectators. “How much did you win?” asked a grouchy old man who desperately needed a shave and haircut. “Seventeen dollars and fifty cents” I told him. He harrumphed as if to say the money wasn’t worth the effort, but I ignored him and began playing seriously. The Silver Spanner is a great online casino where I always seem to come out winning. Soon I had a respectable pile of chips to my credit and one or two of the spectators who clearly understood what was going on began to get excited at this seemingly simple way of making money. They explained to the others what was happening and then there was a rush of unemployed people all wanting a chance in my casino. That’s when I picked up the laptop and ran. Posted on: July 20, 2007
