I have a boss who pays me a monthly retainer to be on call whenever he needs me to write something, anything from a short specification, to a business letter to a letter firing an employee. I have to say that it’s pretty easy work. And he doesn’t call on me very often, especially in these days of recession. So I have to fill my time with something else and what’s better than gambling online to pass the time? On Tuesday I sent off a quotation and fixed myself a cup of coffee while I read the paper and sat quietly waiting for another phone call from the office requesting more work. Nothing came. I went back to my computer and logged into an online casino and began playing the slot machines. Pretty boring. Slot machines played in a noisy, smoky casino are more exciting than played online. I switched to roulette. I am not concentrating on the wheel and a lot of my attention is directed to the phone which doesn’t ring. I play with $10 chips and play recklessly, scattering the chips across the board and not keeping an eye on the action. At 6, I realized that the office or my boss is not going to call again today. I cash out from the roulette game and I am amazed to see that the credit balance in my deposit account at the online casino is close to $5,000. So much for not concentrating. On Wednesday morning I woke early and went to check my mail. Nothing. I went back to the online casino and back to the slot machines while I wait for the phone to ring or an email to arrive. I play on a slot machine that is marked ‘Progressive Jackpot’ and I play maximum coins all the time, hoping against hope that I may hit the ‘big one’. An hour passes and I sit watching strawberries and lemons spinning on the reels and listening for that phone call. When the fire-engine bell signifying a jackpot goes off, I practically have a heart attack. I won a “modest” progressive jackpot, $1.5 million only. What shall I do tomorrow - work or gamble online for a living? Posted on: June 6, 2009
