I reach for my laptop as I rush for the door, “Leave the laptop, it’s a kids’ gymnastic display. Do you want to gamble there as well?” I grab my cellphone and we run down the stairs to the garage where the car is parked. I break all speed records and set off a couple of radar cameras in our haste not to miss even a minute of granddaughter’s acrobatics. We arrive in time to hear that there will be a half hour delay in the proceedings. I could have put the laptop to good use in the time, I think ruefully. I find someone with a radio and ask if by any chance he is tuned in to the horse racing at Uppington. He shakes his head and edges away from me. Must be some way I can do a little online gambling while we wait, I think. The cellphone! That would certainly be online. There is definitely something called mobile gambling. I remember reading about it and about the doubts of playing poker in an online casino via a cellphone. What if you are holding a big, fat flush and the connection falls? I call up a couple of my friends who also dabble online and ask if anyone has phone number that I can call. I get nowhere. I feel a glimmer of an idea starting somewhere behind my eyes but it is out of focus. The gymnasts are called to order and the somersaulting and cart-wheeling begins to the strains of “Falling Leaves”. That’s it. Online gambling! The New York stock exchange is open and trading is in full swing. I call my broker. “What’s hot?” Posted on: June 1, 2007
