It happens in this city every time a dignitary pays a visit. The entire city goes into gridlock, meaning that nothing, but nothing, moves. If you are home, you remain at home and if you are at the office, you stay in the office. For some of the lucky ones, they were at home gambling online and that’s exactly where they were forced to remain – lucky guys! The city was festooned from top to bottom with red carpets and flowers. Lavish dinners were prepared and chefs and caterers raced around the city getting everything together. I was at home gambling online, playing in a marathon game of Texas Hold’em as it happens and that’s where I got caught when the “no traffic” signal came over the air. It could have been a lot worse. Out in the street all was chaos: soldiers and cops everywhere toting submachine guns, helicopters buzzing overhead and police cars racing up and down the streets with sirens screaming. Boy, was I happy to be sitting at a table innocently engaged in some online gambling. I ante up and am dealt a pair of 2’s. Not much to start with. The flop shows a King, 10 and a 7. Nothing for me. I raise my bet and watch the other guys falling over themselves to bet. The turn is another 7. I fold. The river is yet another 7. I could have had a full house! Just goes to show, I think. I peer out of the window and if anything it looks worse. “I’m stuck in here!” I gloat. What better way to be out of the office and stuck gambling online? I ante up again and get a King and a 9. I bet again and wait for the flop. An Ace, a King and a 2. I have a pair of kings which is slightly hopeful but impossible to tell. I bet as high as I can go and hold my breath for the turn. A 9. I have pairs in Kings and 9’s and there’s a card still to come. I bet again and wait for the river. Aha! A 9. I have a full house in Kings and 9’s and I take the jackpot which is not inconsiderable. As far as I’m concerned this dignitary is welcome to stay in town for months! Posted on: May 12, 2009
