We’ve been eating together once a month for the past 30 years. So far we have recorded one divorce among our membership of 6 couples. But things change. We’ve all grown older, our interests have changed, out financial situations have changed, the conversation at our meals has flagged and there are now periods of silence. The food is still great and we’ve all developed some great cooking skills. Anyway, I decided to introduce a new element in the hopes of perking things up. Halfway through dinner, I fired up my laptop on a side table and logged into an online casino and then clicked on the slot machines. I sat down and went on eating. A few minutes later Mike got up to refill his plate and glanced at the laptop as he passed it. “Aha, I spy an online casino!” he cried. He put his plate down and was clicking away in a few minutes. I had set the volume to high so everyone in the room heard the coins dropping, the wheels spinning and the jackpot bell ringing. Mike hit a small jackpot a few minutes later. “Play only max coins,” I yelled at him, “so you have a chance of hitting the progressive jackpot!” I watched as Joe got up to look at the action. He tried to grab the mouse from Mike and a short tussle developed and ended with Joe holding the mouse. Joe managed to hold on for about ten minutes before Sam grabbed the mouse from him. Joe told me later that he won almost a hundred dollars in 2 jackpots. Then the wives got involved and it was Betty who really had a big win. “I’ve never been inside an online casino before!” she shouted excitedly. She clicked the mouse and jumped when the jackpot bell started ringing and was followed by the noise of coins falling into the tray. She turned to her husband, pulled a face at him and said, “Now I can buy those shoes with my own money!” Posted on: May 1, 2008
