It’s the same every year. We talk about it for weeks, shop for days and pack picnic equipment for hours. Then we set off into the nightmare traffic and find ourselves picnicking in some dusty spot between trees that give no shade. We struggle to get a fire going, the meat is either incinerated or raw and almost inedible despite the smiles and the salads are either wilted or have too much vinegar. We get home 3 hours late, hot tired and in filthy moods. That’s what I call Independence! Last year I installed a DVD in the back seat to relieve the pressure from the children. This year I’m taking my laptop to relieve the parents’ pressure. Nothing cures boredom like online gambling. “What shall I play?” I ask my wife as we take up position at the end of a mile long traffic wait all the way to the top of the hill. “Let’s try Texas Hold’em.” I log into the online casino and find a game about to start. I click my way in, buy chips and we take our places at the table. We are each on our own now and playing against each other. I am dealt a pair of jacks and by the frown on my wife’s face I guess she didn’t fare so well. The guy behind me leans on his horn and I close the twenty foot gap that opened. I signal to the guy behind. I add a bunch of chips and my wife folds. From the flop I pick up a jack, a 7 and a 9. I am excited. I’m holding 3 jacks. The guy behind also gets excited when I fail to move the twelve feet with everyone else. He hoots and I signal with my finger and crawl slowly forward. I add more chips to my bet. On the turn I see a 7. I now have a full house. I move more chips onto my pile and wait for the river. The pest behind me hoots as I win the hand and a huge pile of chips. This is great! This is Independence all right! Posted on: May 13, 2008
