So when they stroll into out house at 5 on a Saturday afternoon I am Mr. Curiosity himself. New blood is always exciting, but the process of checking out the blood types may be a little tricky. The conversation starts with straightforward questions. “So what do you do, Jack?” Retired. Does little of anything - lots of snoozing and eating. “And what are your interests, Jack?” Just about nothing. No hobbies, doesn’t read, doesn’t listen to music. Oh boy, I wonder what time they’ll leave. I give up on him and go to my study and pull out my laptop. Just because this old guy is frozen in time doesn’t mean I have to join him, right? I log into my favorite online casino, the Silver Spanner and click on roulette. Let’s get a little action going in this room, I decide. I ignore dead Jack and start playing with $20 chips. The Silver Spanner online casino has a live croupier in a video show and what actually happens in that you join the video. There is background noise, both from the game you are in and from the casino generally. All designed to make you feel as though you are playing in a real casino. I scatter chips on the board and spin. One chip comes up and I make $700 on that one and lose about $200 on the ones that didn’t come up. A promising start. I give a whoop and Jack’s head turns slowly in my direction to see what all the fuss is about. “I’m gambling in an online casino, Jack. Wanna take a look at the action?” He leaps out his chair and grabs the laptop from me. “Gambling! Why didn’t you tell me?” he yells. “Roulette! Come and show me how to make this thing go!” he pleads. Well, that was the end of my gambling afternoon. Nothing I said or did would make Jack let go of the laptop. We threw him out at midnight. He was still gambling in the Roulette game and had had added about $5,000 to my credit account. We have some accounting to do in the morning. Posted on: May 27, 2008
