Out here in the Caribbean anything is possible. I never liked the place much. The islands, the beaches and the palm trees are overdone, the tourists are overfed and over-noisy and there’s not much to do. On my patio overlooking the ocean I can do whatever I like, but my wife insists on spending time on Beach No. 3. There is nothing, but nothing to do. After I’ve finished with the crossword and checked out the tourists, I’m bored. So when we arrived on the beach this morning, me staggering like a drunk a mule under a pile of chairs, umbrellas, towels and beach-mats I was stunned to see a guy sitting in the middle of a large mat busy on a laptop. I dropped everything and rushed over to see what he was doing. You guessed it. He was gambling online! We parked near him, and I took a good look at his laptop. Then I saw that he had a blue-tooth air-phone plugged in at the side. Cell phone technology has come to the island and I am in heaven. By 3 o’clock I too had one and I and was looking forward to many happy hours of online gambling on the beach. Online gambling on the beach is different. One feels free and unencumbered. I play with large chips, $50 usually, but that depends on the size of the balance in my deposit account at the online casino. I am a lover of 3-card poker. Don’t ask me why – it can be a brutal game. At home I play only when I am dealt at least one jack or higher. Otherwise I fold immediately. The accumulation of money is a little slow like this but it’s steady. On the beach I lower my barrier and bet on just about everything. Playing with big chips, the ups and downs are pretty dramatic and I don’t win like I usually do, but I’m having lots of fun and there is a permanent knot of spectators standing around watching the action. What a change! Anyone for the beach this afternoon? Posted on: April 21, 2008
