I understood how lucky I am as I walk through the door. The extra large waiting room is teeming with people – children running about, pregnant women in droves, miserable looking sick people and a few unshaven old men who looked as through they have been here for some years. I hand over my papers at the desk and get the standard answer: “Take a seat please. We’ll call you.” I wedge myself into a slot on a long bench, unzip my bag and take out the laptop. A few kids crowd around to see what’s going on. I shoo them off by telling them that I am going to work and would they like to help? I log into an online casino and select the slots to start with. I also play on the machine marked Progressive Slots. Who knows? I wonder of anyone has ever won a few million bucks while waiting for an ultrasound. I transfer $1,000 into the slot machine and begin pressing the Max Coin button. Nothing. A few of the old guys are gathered around and shaking their heads as they see my money going down the tubes. I persist. Out of the corner of my eye I see people being called into the ultra-sound rooms and I wonder when it will be my turn. As much as I try, I cannot line up 3 of anything, let alone the cherries which are the big winners on this machine. The best I do is to get 3 lemons in a row, which gives me 80 coins. The impossible happens a split second after the receptionist calls my name. I slam the lid closed and grab the laptop. Inside the ultrasound room the jackpot bell is till ringing. Should I ask the ultrasound man to check what’s happening inside the laptop or wait until I get home?
