We had a public holiday here last week and one of my nieces organized a family picnic. This was no small task; we are a large family and even larger when we get into in-laws, hangers on, freeloaders and other individuals who claim a relationship. We met up at a rest stop on highway 443 and then followed the lead car in the heavy holiday traffic. Finally we were led into a parking area and told to unpack our things and follow the cousin in the red shirt. I noticed one youngster, unknown to me, carrying what looked like a laptop bag over his shoulder, but I immediately dropped the thought, knowing that we were miles from anywhere and that unless he was planning on doing some writing, he was wasting his time with a laptop. Boy, was I wrong! We mingled and caught up on family news, gossip and scandals and watched the youngsters kicking a ball around for half an hour. Soon it was time to eat, followed, of course, by the famous family after-luncheon nap. Something woke me rudely after about ten minutes and I looked up to see that one of the picnic tables had been converted into an online casino station by the young man who had been carrying the laptop bag. A game was going on and when I got up and walked over to take a look at the action, I saw that an online craps game was in full swing and that it was the raucous noise and shouting of the players and spectators that had woken me. A crowd of relatives was knotted around the laptop and by the sound of the yells and curses, some major family money was being wagered in this makeshift but very active online casino. I am continually amazed at the attraction and popularity of online gambling. It seems that no matter where one is and no matter what one is doing, if there is a chance of connecting one’s computer or laptop to the internet, the first thing one does is to log onto an online casino. May my family always be among the winners! Posted on: April 9, 2007
