Pete’s yacht was tied up at Livorno, a marina on the coast of Tuscany in Italy. We arrived there on a beautiful day with a clear blue sky overhead and a slight wind blowing. ‘It’s perfect,’ said Pete. ‘The four of us are going to have a great time. We’ve got 2 laptops with satellite phone connections and we can gamble in online casinos night and day. Let’s cast off and move away from the coast and we’ll log right in and start gambling!’ Half an hour later we were sailing, being pushed out to sea by the breeze. ‘Our first call is the island of Elba where we’ll stop for a couple of hours to pay respects to Napoleon and drink a couple of glasses of the new wine they’re making here. Okay, who’s for a game of Texas Hold’em poker?’ The laptop and its phone connection worked perfectly and soon we were logged into an online casino and joined a game of Texas Hold’em. I anted up and was dealt an Ace and 10. I waited for the calling to go around and watched the flop come down. 7, 9, K. Nothing for me. I bet again and waited for the turn. A 10. Another bet and then the river, another 10. My three 10’s took the hand and a small jackpot and I anted up for the next deal. A 4 and a 7. I folded and sat the hand out. The game went on. I won another jackpot, larger this time, and then the island of Elba was close and we shut down the laptops and got ready to tie up the yacht. We sailed into the marina of Portoferraio, the largest town on the island. We walked into the town, stopped at a cafe and drank a few glasses of red wine. We wandered around the town, stopping to look at Napoleon’s residence. ‘Pity there were no computers back then,’ said Pete. ‘Old Napoleon could have had a great time gambling online in such a nice place.’ Back on board we set sail southwards to go around the bottom of Italy on our way to Greece. We fired up the laptops and logged into the online casino again, this time 2 of us playing roulette and the other 2 playing blackjack. I had a moderately good time at the roulette table and ended the session winning about $700. It’s a great life being at sea! Posted on: March 13, 2009
