The drive to the mall was easier than driving to the office and I was there in 20 minutes. I sat down at a table at the coffee shop he had named and waited. 15 minutes after our meeting time I opened my laptop and logged into the online casino. There was no sign of the boss so I clicked into the online slots and started playing. I had fun but I was constantly sweeping the aisles of the mall in case the boss arrived. I felt guilty about gambling while waiting for him. After half an hour I saw him strolling along talking on his cell phone. I closed the laptop and waited, but he sat down on a marble step next to a pool of water and went on talking. I opened my laptop again and went back to the online casino and the slots, this time playing on a progressive jackpot machine. I played ‘Max Coins’ and kept one eye on the boss. I closed the lid when I saw him put his phone in his pocket, but it rang again and he sat down to talk. This call went on for half an hour. I played the slots, winning and losing and hearing no sign of any progressive jackpot. Three more times the boss received phone calls. I switched games in the online casino to roulette and began scattering $5 chips at random on the board. I hit a single number, let my win ride and watched that number come up again. I was up nearly $5,000 taking my losses into account and I was feeling pretty good. The boss came over, called a waitress and ordered us coffees and then his phone went. I went back to the roulette wheel and bet $5,000 on red. Number 21, red, came up and feeling quite reckless and irritable now I pushed the entire $10,000 onto the ‘odds’. I spun the wheel and watched, unable to breathe. Number 9. An odd number! $20,000! I breathed a huge sigh and suddenly my boss leaned over and said, “What are you working on now?” Posted on: March 9, 2009
