Outside the airport the area is teeming with arriving and departing passengers. Cabs are fighting for space, cops are screaming at cars to move, pedestrians are dodging between the cars with trolleys and chaos reigns. The departure hall is a mass of long lines and lost passengers looking for their check-in point. Grim faced security men cradle mean looking machine pistols in their arms. I mutter farewell to our house guests who are about to joint the security check line and I head for a quiet corner where I can open my laptop and do a little online gambling while I keep an eye on their progress to the ticket counter. The wireless connection is simple and fast and I choose to play slots. I click to play “Tomb raider” and it doesn’t take long before I am immersed to the point where I forget why I am gambling online in the airport. I remember, jump up and search the lines for my relatives but they have disappeared from sight. I grab my laptop and rush over to the entrance to passport control but I am stopped by an official who demands to see my passport and tells me that only passengers are allowed beyond this point. I abandon my online gambling and head for home where I tell my wife that I am only about eighty percent sure they left the country as I didn’t actually witness their departure. We decide to wait another hour before we celebrate. I fire up the laptop and we play blackjack in the Silver Spanner online casino, waiting for the phone call which will tell us that that our visitors are coming back. It was just after I split a pair of tens and called for a hit on both of them that the phone did ring. Aunt Jane was calling from her cell phone. “I know you were worried about us leaving so I thought I would let you know that I have just sat down in the plane. Goodbye and thank you.” “Twenty dollars says you don’t get an ace,” beams my wife. Posted on: March 15, 2008
