It doesn’t matter where you live these days, its unfriendly out there. I have family in Beirut, Kandahar, Kabul, Gaza City and Damascus and they all complain in the same way. We had an online conference of all the cousins a few weeks ago and we all surprised each other when each of us in turn said that we were avid online gamblers. Not that any of us are addicted, it turns out, but it’s what we do when the heat rises outside on the streets and the best way to pass the time until sanity returns is to fire up our computers and stay home gambling online. Sometimes the stay-home session last for a day and other times it goes on much longer. Some of these sessions can be pretty costly as well when you find yourself losing spin after spin at the roulette wheel or hand after hand at the poker table. But there are winning streaks well. George, who lives in one of the posh suburbs of Beirut and who is not short of anything, told us how he won a fortune at the roulette wheel at one stay-home session. He explained that it was enough to buy himself the new red Ferrari F599 FS 599 Fuoristrada. It cost over 250,000 Euros, he added. That’s a lot of money for staying home, I thought. George explained that he was playing with $100 chips in an online casino that advertised no limits. I dropped a chip onto my birthday, number 19, he said. It came up and I left the $3,500 on the 19 and scattered a few more chips across the table. 19 came up again, giving me about $120 thousand. I left it one more time against all odds. That kind of bet is idiotic but it seemed that the entire city was full of idiots that day. Well the rest is history. 19 came up third time in a row. Over 4 million! We flew to Italy, spent a month touring around there and ordered the car. From there we caught a cruise ship to the Caribbean. I’m still trying to spend that money! Posted on: March 7, 2008
